Austrian Audio has extended its highly-successful Hi-X6 headphone range with the addition of the Hi-X60 model -a professional reference headphone for recording and FOH applications.

Featuring the sonic signature of the Hi-X6 series, with its natural and spacious sound, the Hi-X60 over-ear, closed-back design is ideally suited for use in loud environments, for example, in the studio or front-of-house (FOH).

In the studio the Hi-X60’s closed-back isolation prevents sound from escaping out into the recording environment and interfering with the microphone capture. At FOH the high passive-noise suppression ensures an optimum signal-to-noise ratio creating an accurate and hearing-friendly sonic environment. For instrument or vocal tracking both features work together to provide the artist with a coherent, healthy signal without leakage.

The Hi-X60 offers remarkable comfort even for long sessions, leaving the user fatigue-free and able to focus on workflow. All touch points are made from soft, durable memory-foam. The ear pads feature the acclaimed Hi-X design with plenty of internal space and smaller external size. The ear pads can be replaced with ease. In additionthe headband has a smart cut-out to relieve pressure on the head.

Balanced and rich in detail

The closed-back Hi-X60 delivers a wide frequency response (5Hz to 28kHz according to the manufacturer) and a balanced, detail-rich sound with a high level of transparency. The bass response is pleasantly understated, particularly at the extreme low end of the spectrum, which users listening to music with a lot of bass will doubtless appreciate. Austrian Audio’s 44mm High Excursion drivers feature a ring magnet system that creates a powerful magnetic field, while a copper-clad aluminium voice coil reduces the moving mass to a minimum. This allows the membrane to move and change direction faster, which provides a more responsive impulse reaction, and the Hi-X60’s stereo imaging and sound depth thoroughly uphold Austrian Audio’s reputation.

For professional users and audiophiles

In addition to their high-quality sound and highly effective passive isolation, users will doubtless also appreciate the Hi-X60 headphones’ ease of use. The headband features a ratcheted adjustment facility to ensure a secure fit, while the memory foam ear cushions and headband padding promise a high level of comfort. What is more, the Hi-X60’s hinged construction also allows it to be folded to a size that will easily fit into a bag or rucksack. All of these features make the Hi-X60 a reliable companion for professional audio engineers as well as a good choice for discerning users looking for a headset for listening to music – the latter group will also appreciate the headphones’ low impedance, which at just 25 ohms allows a respectable level of volume to be achieved without needing a powerful headphone amp.

DESIGN

If you’re familiar with Austrian Audio headphones, the Hi-X60 doesn’t go far with its design. It is a single-entry compact over-ear headphone designed for studio recording and front-of-house application.

The headphone has a primarily matte black color, with subtle red accents with its logo and texts. The cups are oval-shaped, with enough room to avoid touching the ears

One thing to note is that the internal wiring from the left to the right side is exposed, in an interestingly fashionable way. The wire is twisted in a way that adds some flair to the overall look of the headphones.

All the rugged parts are made of metal- hinge bars, angles, and axes. This is a durable and long-lasting product, which can also be brought to the road because it’s foldable.

COMFORT & ISOLATION

The Hi-X60 is a comfortable headphone, even for people with smaller heads like me. With the headband adjuster pushed to the minimum, I can get a secure fit. Even when using it for longer trips, it does not fall off even when I doze off.

The clamping force is just right. The earpads are comfortable due to slow retaining memory foams. However, I do feel it to be a bit heavy. It weighs 320g, which is, to be honest, not that heavy compared to other headphones out there but I do tend to be sensitive in this area.

Isolation with the Hi-X60 is really good. Sound does not leak on both ways – inside and outside and there is a specific purpose for that.

Since this headphone is designed for studio recording and front-of-house live recording, it is crucial that the user can properly hear the music without outside noise and that the recording does not leak the sound from the headphones to the mic. The design and the stock earpads have a dampening effect that prevents this from happening.

STOCK CABLE

The package includes 2 stock cables in different lengths – 1 x 3m and 1 x 1.2m. Both cables have a screwable 3.5mm (1/8 inch) to 6.2mm (1/4 inch) adapter for flexibility in use in the studio and on the go.

The other side of the cable has a 2.5mm bayonet system, similar to the ones found in other Austrian Audio headphones.

Not much can be found on the stock cables apart from their model numbers. They are HXC3 black (3m) and HXC1m2 black (1.2m). From its name, I could guess that they are HXC cables with variable lengths.

Upon visual inspection, these are durable cables with adequate thickness. They are insulated in a matte black casing, similar to other headphones on the market.

The 1.2m length cable is comfortable to use on the go. There are no microphonics or unwanted sounds when moving with them.
