Description
English ivy, a non-regulated Class C noxious weed, is a woody, evergreen, perennial vine often found in King County’s urban and suburban forests. Vines are trailing or climbing, and can reach 90 feet long with stems 1 foot wide. This term usually refers to plants with a combination of white (or yellow) and green zones. Patterns or mottling in the colour of leaves can arise from differences in the amount of the green pigment (chlorophyll) or from variations from other pigments. Hedera helix ‘Goldheart’ is possibly one of the most attractive of the variegated ivies. It has lovely foliage being dark green with bright yellow centres and, although vigorous, can be easily kept under control. It prefers an alkaline soil in sun or partial shade and protection from harsh winds. Once established juvenile plants can live up to 10 years before reaching maturation. English ivy plants can live up to 100 years or longer with one plant in England being documented at more than 400 years in age.
